For me, Melaka felt vibrant and colorful, especially in the evening – lively, noisy, yet filled with historic buildings and cozy little spots. I didn’t visit any museums, go shopping, or check off a long list of must-see attractions in this city. Instead, I wandered through the streets, enjoyed delicious food at riverside cafés, admired the architecture, and soaked in the street art. I didn’t stay overnight in Melaka, and for a first visit, one long day was enough to get a feel for the place. However, I think there’s plenty to do here if you decide to stay longer, perhaps for a weekend.
Probably the most amusing attraction in Melaka (which I couldn’t resist trying myself) is the abundance of tourist trishaws. These are bicycles rigged with a “throne,” extravagantly decorated with cartoon character paraphernalia, lights, and, of course, blaring music at full volume.
