For me, it’s all about contrasts and differences. The local mamak eateries, where we had a meal for two with drinks for just €6 (it was delicious, and no, we didn’t get sick). And then the rooftop bars, where the staff bows to you as you enter and leave.
Bus station and local café restrooms – still squat toilets, with water flushed manually using a bucket nearby – true story :) And then there are the fragrant hotel lobbies and gleaming shopping malls. Bare feet in temples and dancing fountains. Huts and skyscrapers sharing the same street. Just like the mix of religions, cultures, and languages in a city of 2 million people.
